A diode is a two-terminal electronic component that conducts current primarily in one direction (asymmetric conductance); it has low (ideally zero) resistance in one direction, and high (ideally infinite) resistance in the other. A semiconductor diode, the most commonly used type today, is a crystalline piece of semiconductor material with a junction connected to two electrical terminals. Semiconductor diodes were the first semiconductor electronic devices.
The ohm is an electrical measurement defined as the resistance between two points of a conductor when a constant potential difference of one volt, applied to these points, produces in the conductor a current of one ampere.
A rheostat is a variable resistor which is used to control current. Rheostats can vary the resistance in a circuit without interruption. The construction is similar to a potentiometer. It uses only two connections, even when three terminals are present (as in a potentiometer). Unlike potentiometers, rheostats have to carry significant current, thus they are mostly constructed as wire wound resistors.
