Cables of many forms are pervasive in foodservice equipment. A cable is a wire or grouping of wires usually insulated and held together within an overall sheath. The assembly is used for the transmission of electrical power or electrical signals to and from various components within a piece of equipment. Cables may be housed internally such as with ribbon cables, or may be external such as with power cords. An electrical cable is an assembly of one or more wires running side by side or bundled, which is used to carry electric current.
A cable assembly is the composition of one or more electrical cables and their corresponding connectors. A cable assembly is not necessarily suitable for connecting two devices but can be a partial product (e.g. to be soldered onto a printed circuit board with a connector mounted to the housing). Cable assemblies can also take the form of a cable tree or cable harness, used to connect many terminals together.
A gland (gland seal)is used to prevent leakage of fluid, such as water or steam, between sliding or turning parts of machine elements. One simple example found throughout foodservice operations is a faucet. Other types of sealed connections without moving parts are also sometimes called glands; for example, a cable gland or fitting that connects a flexible electrical conduit to an enclosure, machine or bulkhead facilitates assembly and prevents liquid or gas ingress.
A screw is a type of fastener, in some ways similar to a bolt typically made of metal, and characterized by a helical ridge, known as a male thread (external thread). Screws are used to fasten materials by digging in and wedging into a material when turned, while the thread cuts grooves in the fastened material that may help pull fastened materials together and prevent pull-out.
A screw drive is a system used to turn a screw. At a minimum, it is a set of shaped cavities and protrusions on the screw head that allows torque to be applied to it. Usually, it also involves a mating tool, such as a screwdriver, that is used to turn it. Other examples include Phillips head screws and screwdrivers, and Allen hex screws and wrenches.
