Control boards are responsible for temperature, timing, activation and actuation, and other operational functions of restaurant equipment and HVAC systems. They may also display information to the user, such as the current ambient temperature, the temperature of a walk-in cooler, or the time remaining on an oven's cooking cycle. Some control boards may also have diagnostic functions and alarms to alert the user to any problems with the equipment. These boards are critical in ensuring personal comfort or the proper operation and optimal performance of restaurant equipment, helping to ensure that food is cooked and stored safely and efficiently.
Controls of all kinds are integral parts of restaurant equipment operation. A control is a switch or other device by which a machine is regulated. A control may be manual or automatically operated. An electro-mechanical control typically consists of multiple relays, timers, and/or counters wired together on an enclosure panel. Electro-mechanical control is also referred to simply as "Relay Control", which is a more accurate term since solid state electronic relays, timers, and counters are standard components. Contactors, motor and compressor starters, valves, thermostats, and other output devices are used to turn on/off motors, indicator lights, heating elements, and other components used in the equipment.
A display is an electronic device for the visual presentation of data. In restaurant equipment displays are used to indicate time and temperature, transactional information, adjust operational settings, select menus and menu items, serving sizes and more. Another type of "display" is one used to store and merchandise cooked food and bakery products, chilled beverages and other consumer facing offerings.
A screen is physical divider intended to block an area from view or to block access. Screens often provide protection or even filtration and may have holes or perforations allowing air or liquid flow. A screen may also refer to a "touch screen" which provides a graphical user interface (a display device) which allows the user to interact with a computer or control by touching areas on the screen. A user can give input or control the information processing system through simple or multi-touch gestures by touching the screen with a special stylus or one or more fingers.
